The borough currently has the highest rate in England, as a programme of surge testing continues. And the latest figures show Bolton's rate has now climbed to 254.9 per 100,000 of population.

That is more than ten times the national average of 23.6 It is almost double the rate in Erewash in Derbyshire whose rate of 136 is the second-highest in England.

Increased testing in areas with a BL3 postcode began last week after steep rise in cases, thought to be driven by the B.1.617.2 strain of the virus, often called the Indian variant.
