King Charles forced to postpone state visit to France amid protests

King Charles' state visit to France has been postponed, the French Presidency has confirmed, amid the country's ongoing protests over retirement reforms.The visit would have been Charles' first to France since becoming King.The French Presidency confirmed the postponement on Friday morning, 24 March.

A Government spokesperson said: “The King and Queen Consort’s state visit to France has been postponed. “This decision was taken with the consent of all parties, after the President of France asked the British Government to postpone the visit.” They plan on rescheduling the meeting "as soon as possible", with Charles and Camilla looking forward to their upcoming trip once new dates are agreed.

Buckingham Palace also confirmed the postponement in a statement: “The King and The Queen Consort’s state visit to France has been postponed. “Their Majesties greatly look forward to the opportunity to visit France as soon as dates can be found.” Charles and Camilla were due to travel from France to Germany for a state visit from next Wednesday to Friday, and it is understood the visit to Berlin will proceed as planned.

Elsewhere, the Elysee Palace announced the King’s first state visit of his reign has been pushed back after the announcement of more protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s retirement age reforms.
