King Charles III is expected to choose France as a surprise destination for his first state visit. Charles, 73, is said to have bonded with France president Emmanuel Macron over environmental issues, leading to plans to visit Paris for his first foreign trip as monarch rather than one of the Commonwealth realms.

The new King has returned to Scotland alongside Queen Consort Camilla, 75, to grieve in private following his late mother Queen Elizabeth II 's state funeral on 19 September, as the Royal family observe a week-long period of mourning.

He will recuperate from a "relentless" period in the public eye since ascending the throne during the short break, before resuming his royal duties.

Charles could head to France as soon as next month on a trip that could also include Germany, according to The Telegraph. The publication reported that The Foreign Office, which has the final say over the destinations for royal visits, is keen to use the diplomatic power of the monarchy to improve relations with major European neighbours after Brexit.
