The Foreign Office is supporting the family of a teenager who has gone missing in Tenerife. Jay Slater, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, went missing on the Spanish island after going to stay with people he had met after a night out, his friend Lucy told the Manchester Evening News.

The 19-year-old was on holiday with Lucy and another pal for a music festival, but has since been reported missing to local police.

A desperate search is now underway on the island, with officials at the Foreign Office supporting Jay's family. A spokesperson for the department also confirmed that they are in touch with the local authorities in Tenerife. Jay was last in touch with Lucy at around 8am yesterday morning (July 17).

He told her he had tried to catch a bus from the apartment where he had been to stay but was having to walk instead. Lucy described the area where Jay's phone location was tracked - in the Rural de Teno Park, or the National Park of Teno - as being 'in the middle of nowhere' and somewhere that is popular with hikers.
