James Burke was a member of the Five Stairsteps, who had a hit in 1970 with “O-o-h Child.”Burke formed the Five Stairsteps along with his brothers and sister as they were growing up in Chicago.

Still teens when they began recording together, the siblings got their group name from their mother, who thought the looked like stairsteps when they lined up by height.

After a few modest hits on the R&B chart, they scored a smash with “O-o-h Child,” a gentle song with encouraging lyrics that helped define the summer of 1970 for many listeners.

Members of the Five Stairsteps later formed the Invisible Man’s Band and had an R&B hit with “All Night Thing.” Burke was also an artist, who earned a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago as a.

Chris Willman Music WriterJames Burke, whose shared lead vocals helped make “O-o-h Child” into a smash for his group the Five Stairsteps in 1970, has died at age 70.Word of Burke’s death first began to circulate on Saturday and was confirmed to Rolling Stone on Tuesday by brother and bandmate Dennis Burke, who said the cause of death was pneumonia.The Five Stairsteps are often thought of as a one-hit-wonder band because of the outsize popularity of “O-o-h Child,” which continues to rack up cover versions today, including one that was released just last month by KISS member Paul Stanley. But the group had 19 singles that charted on either the R&B or pop charts — usually both — between the years of 1966-80.
