City started the brighter of the two teams and had plenty of possession in the opening stages. The Reds were offered a warning of what was to come when only last-ditch defending denied Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne opening the scoring.
United did not learn their lesson and went behind in the eighth minute to a Phil Foden strike. Patient play from the hosts eventually found Bernardo Silva on the left.
His cross into the box picked out Foden unmarked and he slammed the ball into the roof of the net past David de Gea.
