A government minister has rejected calls from Andy Burnham for a new national inquiry into grooming gangs. Culture secretary and Wigan MP Lisa Nandy said she disagreed with the Greater Manchester mayor after he expressed his support for a new investigation into historical child sexual abuse in areas including Oldham and Rochdale.

But the Labour MP and cabinet minister said the government would not rule out launching a further investigation “if it’s needed”.

It comes after Mr Burnham said on Thursday (January 9) that he is 'not opposed' to a national review. The Labour mayor told BBC Radio Manchester that he thinks there is a case for a 'limited national inquiry' following the local reviews he first commissioned back in 2017.

Ministers have said their priority is acting on the 2022 recommendations of a seven-year inquiry led by Professor Alexis Jay into child sexual abuse, which have not yet been implemented.
