A Place in the Sun’s Jonnie Irwin has recently shared a heartbreaking health update with his fans as he continues to battle terminal lung cancer.The presenter, who first revealed the diagnosis two years ago, has now announced that tumours have spread to his brain.
On Thursday, he took to his Instagram stories to reveal that he’s begun Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, but what exactly is it, and how does it work?
A hyperbaric chamber is a highly-pressurised tube or room where a patient is given 100% pure oxygen to breathe. Due to the treatment providing air at a higher pressure, it means the lungs have the capacity to take in more oxygen than by just breathing on one’s own.
The TV personality shared a picture of his version of the therapy - a portable zip-up chamber that he used after walking to the treatment centre in Newcastle, where he resides with his wife, Jessica, 40 and their three children, Rex, 3 and two year old twins Rafa and Cormac. “And at the end of this walk…is this…hyperbaric oxygen therapy,” he typed.
