A horse was rescued from a canal on Sunday afternoon (May 28) after fire crews rushed to the scene near Astley. The animal had reportedly ended up in the water in the Bridgewater Canal, close to Higher Green Lane, shortly before 4pm and needed to be rescued by specialist crews.
A number of fire engines, including water incident and technical response units, were pictured at the scene as lines and a natural ramp were used to help the horse to safety.
Emergency services were at the scene for around two hours, it was confirmed. READ MORE: Join the FREE Manchester Evening News WhatsApp community A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At 3.45pm this afternoon (Sunday, 28 May), two fire engines from Farnworth and Atherton fire stations, the water incident unit from Heywood, and the technical response unit from Leigh, were called to attend Higher Green Lane, Astley amid reports of a horse in the water. “Crews arrived quickly and used lines and a natural ramp to rescue the animal.
