Gene Maddaus Senior Media Writer Hollywood studios and entertainment unions are close to a compromise on a new California law to tighten set safety rules, which comes in response to the fatal “Rust” shooting.
The compromise would adopt the film industry’s firearm safety rules, which are currently voluntary, into state law. It would also mandate specialized training for armorers and others who work with firearms on sets, according to sources familiar with the talks.
The two sides have been working for more than a year on the legislation following the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in New Mexico in October 2021.
Actor Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed are each facing involuntary manslaughter charges for their roles in the accidental shooting.
