The cost of living crisis has left many Brits wondering how they will be able to face soaring prices. To help with energy bills, the Chancellor unveiled plans on Thursday that will see each home in the country be given £400 towards the cost.

Initially households were to be given a refund of £200 on bills in October and this was to be a loan that had to be repaid. This has now changed and instead the Chancellor announced he will be giving households £400 - and the money is not to be repaid.

Rishi Sunak said: “We know that people are facing challenges with the cost of living and that is why today I’m stepping in with further support to help with rising energy bills.” You do not need to apply or sign up for anything – your energy supplier will simply credit the £400 to your account so you don’t have to pay as much.

How this discount is applied will depend on how you get your electricity and gas. If you pay with a direct debit, which 69 per cent of Brits do, the £400 will be divided up and a portion of it will be deducted from your bill every month.
