A Greater Manchester Police detective accused of rape and multiple sex offences is to stand trial next summer. Detective Constable Stephen Hardy faces a total of 23 charges which include rape, child sex offences and possessing indecent images of children and extreme pornographic images.

The 45-year-old, who is based within the force's Stockport division, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today (Monday). READ MORE: Murder investigation launched after man found dead in house in Rochdale He is accused of stealing two police batons and two sets of body armour; three charges of possessing extreme pornography; two of coercive behaviour; six sexual assaults of a girl; two of inciting or causing a girl to engage in sexual activity; raping a 15-year-old girl; two offences of raping a woman; causing a child to look at an image of sexual activity; causing a woman to engage in sexual activity; two sexual assaults of a woman and two of taking indecent images of a child.

Hardy, of Hyde Road, Mottram, Tameside, was not asked to enter any pleas and he was further remanded on bail by Judge Neil Flewitt, QC, until October 31.

A day for his trial, expected to last seven days, was fixed to begin on July 3. Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that has been suspended from the force.
