It’s been over 20 years since Ridley Scott rocked the period action film genre with his beloved “Gladiator,” eventually earning Best Picture and Best Actor wins at the Academy Awards in 2001.

A long-gestating sequel is finally going in front of cameras this summer, with recent Oscar-nominee Paul Mescal (“Aftersun“) taking the lead role and Scott returning to the director’s chair.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief “Beijing 2022,” the official documentary about the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, has been set as the opening film of the revived Beijing International Film Festival. It is directed by noted narrative and documentary film maker Lu Chuan (“Kekexili,” “City of Life and Death” and Disney’s “Born in China”) and will have its world premiere at the festival. The festival will run April 22-29 and be based in the Huairou district which has become an out of town hub for the film industry, as well as other venues in the Chinese capital. Sydney Film Festival Teases Dozen First Picks

Seven are feature films, five are documentaries. “The 2023 program will expand on this legacy, promising to ignite stimulating dialogues and present powerful ideas that will broaden audience perspectives,” said festival director Nashen Moodley. He noted that over the previous 69 editions the Sydney festival has showcased more than 10,000 films. Hugh Jackman has shared a message imploring his fans to consider the importance of sun safety, revealing he’s currently awaiting test results to determine if he’s developed new skin cancers.In a video shared on Instagram yesterday (April 4), the actor explained that he’d “just had two biopsies done” at the request of his doctor, who “just saw some little things [that] could be, or could not be, basil cell [carcinomas]”. According to the Skin Care Foundation, basil cell carcinomas are the most commonly found forms of skin cancer, with around 3.6million diagnoses made yearly in the US alone. These carcinomas “most often occur when DNA damage from exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or indoor tanning triggers changes in basal cells in the outermost layer of skin (epidermis), resulting in uncontrolled growth”.Jackman noted that he’ll “find out in two or three days” whether he has in fact grown any new carcinomas, and said that he’ll alert viewers as soon as he receives his test results.

Angelique Jackson Denzel Washington is in final negotiations to join Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Gladiator” sequel, reteaming after 2007’s “American Gangster.” If the deal closes, the two-time Academy Award winner would join newly minted Oscar nominees Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan, whose participation in the project broke Thursday. The sequel follows 2000’s blockbuster hit “Gladiator,” which was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won five, including best picture. It earned $460 million at the box office, and now Scott is returning to direct and produce the sequel. The original “Gladiator” starred Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman soldier forced into slavery who vows revenge against Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Since Maximus dies at the end of “Gladiator,” Mescal will play Lucius, the son of Maximus’ lover Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen), in the sequel. Keoghan is in negotiations to play Emperor Geta.

Jelly Roll is very big on giving back.According to Entertainment Tonight, the country music star helped launch a music studio inside of Davidson County Juvenile Detention Center in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was once incarcerated.The outlet reported that a portion of the proceeds from Jelly Roll’s Bridgestone Arena headlining show in December and the Redemption Songs event earlier this year helped fund the program.ET included a quote from the press release of the program that read, “This collaboration, featuring music luminaries Jeffrey Steele and ERNEST, alongside 35 pro/hit songwriters who helped kick off the program launch, embodies the belief in music’s role in personal growth and redemption, showcasing the journey from juvenile detention to success.”In December 2022, the musician spoke to People magazine about creating a music studio in the detention center and how he wants “to bring hope” to troubled youths.“It’s important, man. I think it’s important that we give back, especially [to] our kids,” he told the outlet at the time.
