A former Lanarkshire GP has received a knighthood in the Queen's New Year Honours list. Dr Gregor Smith, Scotland's chief medical officer (CMO), says he feels "surprised and honoured" after being awarded the accolade for his services to public health.

The Larkhall GP has been beside First Minister Nicola Sturgeon at press briefings over the course of the pandemic, advising the Scottish Government on its response to COVID-19.
