Foreign Office issues Spain and Portugal travel warning as Storm Oscar brings severe weather

Anyone going on holiday to certain areas of Portugal or Spain this week have been warned that a storm could wreak havoc on their plans, bringing lashings of rain and strong winds.The UK Foreign Office has issued a warning about Storm Oscar, advising holidaymakers to be wary of the adverse weather conditions and follow the advice of the local authority.

The Canary Islands are likely to be worst hit by the storm, as well as Madeira, Porto Santo and the Azures in Portugal. There are several weather warnings in place for this week.The Canary Islands, which is a popular holiday destination made up of several islands just off the coast of Africa, will face the worst of Storm Oscar between Monday 5 and Thursday 8 June.

The FCDO advises Brits to check with their tour operator before travel. It states: "You should check with your tour operator or accommodation provider before you travel and follow the instructions of local authorities."According to the Spanish Meteorological Agency, heavy rain and strong winds are forecast, particularly for Tenerife, Palma, Gran Canaria and Valverde.

Gusts of up to 55mph have been forecast, as well as a 100 percent change of rainfall in some of the most popular destinations like Tenerife and Palma.
