People in the UK are being warned of food becoming even more expensive to buy, as prices have hit a record high.Food inflation reached 12.4 per cent in the year leading up to November, accelerated by the rise in price of meat, eggs and dairy.

This is the highest rate since records began in 2005. It's also a jump from 11.6 per cent in October, according to the latest BRC-NielsenIQ Shop Price Index.

Shoppers are being warned of a "bleak" winter and dampened Christmas cheer because of the skyrocketing prices. Meat, eggs and dairy have seen the biggest rise in price, thanks to the high energy costs involved in feeding and transporting the animals.

The price of coffee also skyrocketed last month due to high input costs, according to the British Retail Consortium's chief executive Helen Dickinson.
