First hearing of Cameron House fire deaths inquiry takes place tomorrow

The first hearing of a probe into the deaths of two guests in the Cameron House fire tragedy will take place tomorrow.A Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) preliminary hearing into the deaths of Richard Dyson, 38, and Simon Midgley, 32, will be held at Paisley Sheriff Court tomorrow morning.It comes over four years since the couple were killed in the fire at the Loch Lomond hotel.The tragic couple, who were enjoying a pre-Christmas break, were killed after porter Christopher O’Malley placed a bag of fireplace ash into a cupboard on December 18, 2017, sparking the blaze at the five-star resort.A total of 214 guests, including 25 children, fled the inferno in the early hours of the morning.The families of Simon, a freelance journalist, and Richard, who was a TV producer, waited three agonising years before they could find out how the fire started.In January last year, Cameron House was fined £500,000 after pleading guilty to a string of fire safety failures, while 36-year-old O’Malley, of Lennox Street in Renton, was sentenced to 300 hours of unpaid work.Jane Midgley, the mother of Simon, hopes an FAI will pave the way for health and safety changes and provide much-needed answers to questions she’s tirelessly fought for.She hopes it will address questions the court cases didn’t provide answers to, including why the five-star hotel, which reopened in September, wasn’t shut down after failing to action fire warnings and why the two men couldn’t escape.She said: “Whenever we go into a public building, such as a hotel, we take it for granted that we are safe – but Simon and Richard weren’t.“This inquiry will examine every detail of that night and establish what changes need to be made.“I know my Simon would be saying ‘we can’t let
