A combination of cold winter temperatures and dry heat from central heating can increase the likelihood of dry eye.The unpleasant experience can make day-to-day life much more tricky than it has to be, with constantly achy and irritated eyes.

Soreness, light sensitivity and blurred vision also can all be warning signs that you are suffering from dry eye, and experts warn it can cause inflammation if left for too long. While many will have eye drops, which can be picked up in high-street pharmacies without a prescription, there are also some lifestyle changes that can ease the uncomfortable symptoms.

Carl Greatbanks, expert at Vision Direct, said: "Dry eyes may not sound very serious but if left untreated, severe dry eye may lead to eye inflammation, abrasion of the corneal surface, corneal ulcers and even vision loss. "To avoid this, it is recommended that people take conscious steps to protect their eyesight during this time of the year."One way of these conscious steps is an exercise called 'palming', which can be easily added to your daily router. To do this, place the palms of your hands slightly cupped over the eyes, without applying pressure.

Let your fingertips overlap, resting on the forehead and try to not let any light through and breathe deeply for a minute.Another straightforward tip that can help you reduce dry-eye symptoms is keeping hydrated.
