Former Liverpool and England midfielder John Barnes has called on Manchester United to back incoming manager Erik ten Hag in this summer's transfer window, but has warned them that they should not spend £100million to sign Frenkie de Jong.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News last week, United are interested in the Barcelona midfielder and are weighing up a £75million move for his services.

De Jong worked with Ten Hag during his time at Ajax and the duo are understood to have retained a strong relationship. Ten Hag has reached out to the Dutchman's agent and is keen to add him to his midfield options at Old Trafford.

United are set to prioritise the addition of a new central-midfielder this summer and could sign at least two.
