Erik ten Hag has explained what role Benni McCarthy will have at Manchester United after his surprise appointment this week.

While United played Atletico Madrid in Oslo, Norway, it emerged that former Porto and Blackburn striker McCarthy was the latest addition to Ten Hag's backroom staff.

McCarthy has joined United as a striker's coach and he's a boyhood fan of the club. McCarthy has joined Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren on Ten Hag's backroom staff, while the Dutchman has also kept Eric Ramsay at the club, who is United's set-piece coach.

Richard Hartis and Craig Mawson are still the goalkeeping coaches.
