The vast majority of people are just as worried about paying their energy bills as they were last winter, despite a fall in prices.

New polling found 88% of people are as concerned or even more so than last year, amid mounting calls for a social tariff for consumers. The average energy bill for households across England, Scotland and Wales increased by 1.2% in January after Ofgem raised its price cap in response to wholesale prices. It means the yearly bill for a household using a typical amount of energy climbed to £1,738, up £21 from the previous cap.

That remains significantly lower than this time last year, when the figure stood at £1,928 per year. But it comes amid plunging temperatures this January.
