Ozzy Osbourne

John Michael "Ozzy" Osbourne (born 3 December 1948) is an English singer, songwriter, actor and television personality. He rose to prominence during the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath, during which he adopted the nickname "The Prince of Darkness".

Osbourne was fired from the band in 1979 due to alcohol and drug problems, but he went on to have a successful solo career, releasing eleven studio albums, the first seven of which were all awarded multi-platinum certifications in the United States. Osbourne has since reunited with Black Sabbath on several occasions.

Commonwealth Games closing ceremony in Birmingham brought many unexpected delights, one of which was Dexys Midnight Runners opening proceedings with their smash hit Come On Eileen.

The night might have belonged to Ozzy Osbourne’s barnstorming surprise performance with Black Sabbath at the night’s close, but plenty were delighted to hear a live rendition of this 1982 classic.

As well as the popular nostalgia, there were many coming to terms with the news of the band’s Birmingham origins, with the closing ceremony a celebration of the musical heritage of the West Midlands. ‘For some reason I thought they were Irish,’ mused one fan, while another tweeted: ‘Loving this (although I am today years old when I found out Dexy’s Midnight Runners were Brummie instead of Scottish). ’However, the Brummies watching were well aware of the band’s heritage. ‘Ansell’s brewery and Dexy’s Midnight Runners.
