African American history often gets buried in the bowels of the past. I am always embarrassed when I learn about moments from Black history that I feel I should already know.

The subject of Margaret Brown’s documentary Descendant is the slave ship Clotilda, found off the coast of Plateau, Alabama (labeled Africatown).

Having premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, then screened at SXSW, it is the first film to open the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival.

Descendant is also produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground.The documentary  follows the living descendants of the enslaved on the ship that landed in Alabama, who are looking for validation and reparations.

And while streamers have taken their lumps lately — and sports is indeed keeping the lights on in linear — the age of blockbuster awards shows appears to be over. Which would mean it’s perhaps an inopportune time for the ceremonies out there looking for a new home or, in the case of the Golden Globes, looking to return, period. Late last month, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. agreed to let Eldridge Industries, run by Todd Boehly, purchase the Golden Globes and make that part of the HFPA a for-profit enterprise. Eldridge has also taken control of Dick Clark Prods., the company that produces the Globes, which means Boehly has a vested interest in getting the show back on NBC.

However, preoccupation occurs when an individual is still consumed in news story even when consumption has ended and one “continuously worr[ies] about stressful events or imagined futures.”When news consumption goes mis-regulated or under-regulated, problematic news consumption can arise as a result of failure of self-regulation.
