Deborah James told kids to 'take chances' and 'marry for love' in final letter

The final letter written by the late Dame Deborah James, which she sent to her family, has been revealed for the first time since her passing on 28 June 2022.The author, journalist, podcast host and cancer campaigner who lost her battle with the disease, wrote the book How To Live When You Could Be Dead whilst she was terminally ill.

In an extract of a letter she wrote to her family in the book, which was obtained by The Sun, the dame shared her experience of her four year fight with cancer, and how to stay strong in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Key life lessons that Dame Deborah wanted to share with her children include the importance of marriage and to marry "only for love" and to "be your number one cheerleader." "I am currently sitting here next to the love of my life, Sebastien," she started the letter. "I never quite knew if you could really have a love of your life, but I now know what the very core of unquestioned love is between two people. "I have always loved my husband.

I fancied him from when I first met him, and I knew I would marry him after our third date." Deborah went on to admit that her husband "wasn't perfect" but he was "right" for her as he respected her and "never let me walk all over him or wrap him around my little finger".
