David Wotherspoon is edging closer to his much-anticipated matchday return. The St Johnstone midfielder has been out since November after picking up a gutting knee injury against Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final.But manager Callum Davidson has revealed the Canadian international, who harbours dreams of making the World Cup, is training with the first team this week.Left-sided wing-back Tony Gallacher is also working quickly towards full fitness.“David is going to start joining in with training this week and hopefully we will get a game for him and Tony Gallacher in the next couple of weeks,” Davidson said.“It will be great news to get them both back, they have been working really hard and are making real progress.

It will be a huge boost to get the pair of them back.“Adam Montgomery had a tight thigh before the Aberdeen game so had to be assessed but we’re hoping he will be fine.

Chris Kane is going for a clean-up on his knee while Callum Booth is still a fair bit away.”Saints, still working to bring a striker in, were shot-shy in front of goal on Saturday en route to a 1-0 home defeat against Aberdeen. The Perth men sit 10th in the early Premiership standings with one win and three defeats from the opening four matches.Davidson said: “There is a lot to be pleased about but there are areas we have to improve on.“We are working hard to address that.

As a squad I feel we are in a better place than we were a year ago when the transfer window closed. But we still have work to do.“Recruitment is one of the hardest parts of the game and we’re looking.“We want to bring in the right players to fit into the team and bring the character we are looking for as well.”
