Daughter's diabetes diagnosis came as a shock but Lanarkshire family support group were there to help

A volunteer group in Lanarkshire is continuing to provide vital support to children living with Type 1 diabetes and their families.Mum-of-two Karen Turner, whose teenage daughter has Type 1 diabetes, has been the chairwoman of the long-established Lanarkshire Diabetes Family Support Group now for a year, and a member for six years.

The volunteer group is affiliated to, and overseen by, the charity Diabetes Scotland.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

Type 1 brings very different issues from the much more common Type 2 diabetes.“When you tell someone your child has diabetes they automatically think of Type 2 – that’s more to do with insulin resistance than insulin dependence,” said Karen. “When the doctor told me my daughter had diabetes my first reaction was, ‘How has she got that, she’s not overweight and takes care of herself?’“She was really fit and active, so they had to explain to me it was Type 1 and that an organ wasn’t working properly.“Type 1 is an auto-immune disease and those who have it have no control over it.
