Concerns have been raised that the suspension of bin collection due to Covid-related staff shortages has been exacerbated by Stirling’s switch to monthly uplifts last year.

One rural councillor claims that, had the council not made the changes, then the disruption brought about by coronavirus would have been lessened.Martin Earl said: “You cannot slash a basic service to the bone and get away with it.”There was uproar when the council decided in June to move grey (landfill) and blue (recycling) bin collections to every four weeks and thousands signed a petition against the changes.

This week Stirling Council was forced to cancel bin collections at a number of locations due to staff absences as a result of workers testing positive for the virus or being deemed to be a close contact, forcing them into isolation.

But residents have hit out at the state of the service adding that they have been left overrun with rubbish because the collections weren’t sufficent before the cancellations. On Wednesday, we told how additional blue bin collections between December 27 and January 2 were suspended.
