Council leader reacts to ‘stunning night’ for Labour as party gains four seats in local elections

Sign up to FREE email alerts from the Northern Agenda The leader of Trafford council has hailed the local elections as a ‘stunning night for Labour’ as the party comfortably retained its overall control in the borough.

Coun Andrew Western said he was delighted with the results after Labour gained four more seats – all from the Conservatives.

The party took seats in Ashton-on-Mersey, Davyhulme East, Davyhulme West and Flixton. Before the results, Coun Western said he was confident his party would end up bigger after the election than it had been before it.

He said: “In what has been a bad night for Labour nationally, we’ll be the only good news story in the country.” A total of 40 Labour councillors now sit on the authority.
