Brendan Fraser, who starred in the original Mummy franchise, has a theory why Tom Cruise’s film remake wasn’t as successful.“It is hard to make that movie,” the Whale star, 53, told Variety in an interview published on Wednesday, October 12. “The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun.”He added: “That was what was lacking in that incarnation.
It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary. I know how difficult it is to pull it off.
I tried to do it three times.”The George of the Jungle actor made his Mummy debut in 1999, playing adventurer Rick O’Connell in the first film.
The movie — directed by Stephen Sommers — was so popular that it spawned two follow-ups in 2001 and 2008, respectively.
