Brendan Fraser was in floods of tears as he picked up the gong for Best Actor at the Oscars in Los Angeles on Sunday night. The actor, 54, won the Academy's top accolade for his role in The Whale, thanking director Darren Aronofsky for “throwing me a creative life-line”. “So this is what the multiverse looks like,” he said, accepting the award with tears in his eyes and a lump in his throat. “I thank the academy for this honour… Darren Aronofsky for throwing me a creative life-line and hauling me aboard the good ship, The Whale." Addressing his fellow best actor nominees, Brendan, who is known for his roles in The Mummy and George of the Jungle, continued: “You laid your whale-sized hearts bare… and it is my honour to be named alongside you in this category.” Brendan went on to thank his co-star in The Whale, Hong Chau, who was seen crying in the audience as she watched Brendan pick up the gong. “I want to tell you that only whales can swim at the depths of the talent of Hong Chau,” he said. “I started in this business 30 years ago and things didn't come easy to me… there was a facility that that I didn’t appreciate at the time until it stopped.” He also paid tribute to his three sons - Griffin, Leland and Holden - as well as his "best first mate", girlfriend Jeanne Moore. The actor defeated a field of contenders including Elvis’s Austin Butler and The Banshees of Inisherin’s Colin Farrell as he scooped his first ever Academy Award.

Brendan received a six-minute standing ovation for his transformative performance in The Whale during its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival last September.
