An eight-year-old boy has died after being shot in the head and face at a farm in Cumbria. Emergency services rushed to the property in Warcop at 2:50pm after a report a child had been seriously injured with a gun.

The boy was taken to hospital by air ambulance suffering 'serious and life threatening injuries to his head and face', Cumbria police said.

The boy died overnight. A man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of causing GBH with intent. However, he is now under investigation for gross negligence manslaughter.

He remains in police custody. A Cumbria Police spokesperson said: "Police and NWAS [North West Ambulance Service] attended. The firearm was secured at the scene by police and an eight-year-old boy was taken to hospital by air ambulance having suffered serious and life-threatening injuries to his head and face." "Sadly, the boy has died overnight.
