The Prime Minister will address the public at 5pm and will be joined by England's Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty, a spokesman for Mr Johnson confirmed.
It comes days before the next stage of the easing of restrictions in England is due to take place in England. Ministers have said this will still go ahead despite concerns around the B1617.2 variant, which was first found in India.
