Belgium has selected Lukas Dhont’s Cannes-winning title Close as its official submission to the International Oscar race this year.Close debuted in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival where it won the Grand Prix in a tie with Claire Denis’s Stars At Noon.The film follows the intense friendship between 13-year-old boys Léo and Remi, which suddenly gets disrupted.

Struggling to understand what has happened, Léo approaches Sophie, Rémi’s mother. The film is billed as an exploration of friendship and responsibility.

The leading roles in Close are played by newcomers Eden Dambrine and Gustav De Waele. Léa Drucker and Kevin Janssens, Marc Weiss, Igor Van Dessel, and Léon Bataille also star.Dhont directed from a screenplay he wrote with Angelo Tijssens.

Close was produced by Michiel Dhont and Dirk Impens for Menuet and co-produced by Diaphana, Topkapi Films and Versus Productions.

In the case of “Living,” the story of Mr. Williams, a bureaucrat in 1953 London grappling with a fatal illness, the meant donning a bespoke pin-striped suit. But he struggled with the wide shoulders that were the fashion of that era. “I didn’t think I had the frame to pull it off,” Nighy says. And there was one feature that was particularly burdensome. “I had to wear a bowler hat, and they are absolutely bizarre,” muses Nighy. “How they caught on, I’ll never know. If a brick fell on your head from a very great height, you’d be fine. If you fell off a horse or a motorbike, you’d emerge unscathed. You could go to war with that hat on and be well protected.”

That was the takeaway at Zurich Summit discussion between Christian Bräuer, managing director of Berlin-based Yorck Kinogruppe; David Laub, acquistions and distribution executive at New York City-based A24; Stephanie Candinas, co-managing director of Zurich’s Arthouse Commercio Movie AG; and Sierra/Affinity’s Kirsten Figeroid. “The short-term perspective is about gas prices – that threatens us the most,” said Bräuer. “In Europe most theaters survived [the pandemic] thanks to public support. Without public support, a lot of small theaters, arthouse theaters, would have had to close.”

She was 88. The classic film, based on Ken Kesey’s novel and exploring the repressive tendency of authority through the story of the patients and staff of a psych ward, won five Oscars in 1976, including best picture and best actor for Jack Nicholson. “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was the first film in more than four decades to sweep the major categories of best picture, director, actor, actress and screenplay. It was nominated for an additional four Oscars and was also a substantial box office hit.

Jelly Roll is very big on giving back.According to Entertainment Tonight, the country music star helped launch a music studio inside of Davidson County Juvenile Detention Center in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was once incarcerated.The outlet reported that a portion of the proceeds from Jelly Roll’s Bridgestone Arena headlining show in December and the Redemption Songs event earlier this year helped fund the program.ET included a quote from the press release of the program that read, “This collaboration, featuring music luminaries Jeffrey Steele and ERNEST, alongside 35 pro/hit songwriters who helped kick off the program launch, embodies the belief in music’s role in personal growth and redemption, showcasing the journey from juvenile detention to success.”In December 2022, the musician spoke to People magazine about creating a music studio in the detention center and how he wants “to bring hope” to troubled youths.“It’s important, man. I think it’s important that we give back, especially [to] our kids,” he told the outlet at the time.
