The Great British Bake Off star Laura Adlington has opened up about the trauma she went through after doctors told her she needed to lose weight in order to have a baby.

Laura, 32, had been trying to conceive for three years with her husband Matt, when they decided to try IVF. Doctors told Laura beforehand though that she must shed 14st if she hoped to start the process. The 2020 GBBO finalist was left distraught and her mental health continued to decline as her friends began to have children around her, which she found "upsetting", despite being happy for them. “Unless you’ve gone through infertility and that heartache of really wanting it and it not happening . . .

it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through,” Anna told Fabulous magazine. “I felt like if I couldn’t be a mum, what’s the point?

I’d always wanted to be a mother and it wasn’t happening.” Laura found it “difficult” to lose 14st as ordered by doctors for IVF, and even considered bariatric surgery to shed the weight at one point, however did not go through with the idea in the end. “It was difficult — people say we obviously didn’t want it enough because I would have lost the weight to have the IVF. "But it was such a lot to lose — about 14st and I just struggled to do that." Anna revealed that she “didn’t want to be here anymore” following her fertility struggles and called upon the Samaritans helpline many times as her mental health suffered.
