App brings Ayrshire artist's work to life as he creates augmented reality pieces

An innovative artist is bringing a new dimension to wall art with the clever use of augmented reality.Gordon Brown, from Prestwick, has created an interactive multimedia experience with his framed wall art which when scanned with a smartphone app comes to life in the hands of the viewer.Gordon, who set up his business Urban Punkz in 2019, is known for his depictions of strong women using a mixture of various media, including photography, graffiti, spray, and ink.Having graduated from Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and working in the creative industry for over 25 years - from luxury Treehouse design to graphic and website design - his style has developed over the years, moving away from traditional oil painting techniques to fusing mixed media.“I enjoy finding new ways of evolving my work and am very curious about innovative technology,” he said.“I started my website Urban Punkz in 2019, to feature my new series of work.

Also, I don’t know if you have ever tried to find a good domain name these days, but it’s not easy with the name Gordon Brown.”Gordon’s newest creative works sees pieces Saint II, No Saint II and Joy II combining augmented reality to take viewers on a virtual journey; an idea he had after working alongside another Prestwick firm.Gordon said: “I had a meeting with the guys from the Aerospace Digital Visualisation Suite (ADVS) in Prestwick about a different project I was working on.

It got me curious about how I could bring this new technology into my art.“I searched and downloaded every single app that had augmented reality capabilities, and started to experiment with digital visuals with the Artivive app.“It helped me easily enable the capabilities of augmented reality in my work flawlessly.”Gordon
