Andy Rourke has sadly passed away. On Friday morning (May 19), it was announced that the former bassist for English rock band The Smiths had died at the age of 59 following a battle with pancreatic cancer. Andy‘s death was confirmed by former bandmate, guitarist Johnny Marr. Keep reading to find out more… “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andy Rourke after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer,” Johnny, 59, tweeted. “Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans,” he continued. “We request privacy at this sad time.” Andy first joined The Smiths in 1982 and performed with the band until their split in 1987.
He later went on to play with The Smiths frontman Morrissey on his solo projects as well as performing with other musicians including Sinead O’Connor, The Pretenders, and Badly Drawn Boys.
In 2005, Andy formed the group Freebass alongside fellow bassists Peter Hook, formerly of New Order and Joy Division, and Gary “Mani” Mounfield of the Stone Roses and Primal Scream.
