While presenting This Morning, Alison Hammond was in tears as she broke her silence on Phillip Schofield’s first TV interview since he left ITV.

Schofield quit the broadcaster after he admitted having an affair with a colleague. The former This Morning presenter, 61, has now issued an apology in a tell-all interview with Amol Rajan.

He said: "I would say to everyone, to my family, my friends, my work colleagues, the public, to ITV, my management company, to everyone that I lied to, that I am desperately sorry." ITV’s This Morning addressed the interview at the start of the show, which was hosted by Alison and Dermot O’Leary, The Liverpool Echo reports.

Dermot said: "It's the top story on This Morning and we don't want to to shy away from it." He added: "It's difficult to cover this story as a friend and a colleague."
