Elizabeth II
Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; born 21 April 1926) is Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms. Elizabeth was born in London, the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and she was educated privately at home. Her father ascended the throne on the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII in 1936, from which time she was the heir presumptive. She began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In 1947, she married Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, with whom she has four children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

Britain was hit by a shockwave last Thursday when it was announced that Queen Elizabeth II had passed away at 96 years of age.

Proceedings across the island came to a standstill as people came to terms with the loss of the long-reigning monarch, who having been on the throne for 70 years, captured the hearts of many before her passing.

In sporting terms, it was unclear as to what would happen in terms of competitive sport fixtures being delayed, and that was confirmed just hours after with the entirety of the British footballing calendar coming to a halt after decisions were made by governing bodies.

Football will continue for the most part at the weekend, with only three of the 10 English Premier League games scheduled being postponed due to policing issues surrounding the Queen's death, although sporting events will stop on Monday on the day of her funeral.
