The Queen, Saudi Arabia, 1979The Queen was made an ‘honorary man’ for her tour to Saudi Arabia in 1979. Newspapers noted that this was a rare example of the monarch’s host dictating her dress code, rather than royal custom.

Her milliner Frederick Fox attached a scarf to all the hats he created so that it would be easy for the Queen to cover her head whenever required, while sleeves and skirts covered the wrists and ankles.  Princess Diana, Dubai, 1989The milliner Philip Somerville created a turban hat for the Princess of Wales to wear on a visit to Dubai in 1989 - his creation allowed Diana to conform with the modest dress code required whilst still cutting a dash.
